Making money with Google AdSense can be as easy as creating the Google AdSense account and including ads on a site. However, to get the most out of AdSense takes more effort. It requires designing an attractive layout, using proper keywords and positioning among others.

Tip #1: Keywords Keywords Keywords

Google uses keywords as a major part of their algorithm to determine search results. This is simple – a website promoting golf clubs should include golf clubs multiple times on the website. This makes sense. Google will parse through the content on the website, find keywords for golf clubs and understand that the website is about golf clubs. Make sure the quantity of the keywords you are promoting is high. Google will detect keyword density and move your website ever closer to the desired number 1 page results spot!

Tip #2: Quality Content

While keywords are important, having a website that is nothing but keywords after keywords after keywords is not the way to go. Google is extremely concerned about quality content. Both you the webmaster and the casual surfer appreciate this. When searching for golf clubs, you want to see a quality site on golf clubs, showing specs, prices, different brands, etc. What you do not want to see is a website that says nothing but golf clubs over and over again. Therefore, Google not only looks at keywords but looks at content. Google’s customer is the web surfer. And the web surfer wants content. So, Google includes quality content in their search engine algorithms as well as keywords.

Tip #3: Update your Content

The more quality content you have, the better. But it is also important that you update your content. It is quality information that originally gets surfers to your site. But it is the continually updated content that keeps them coming. Would you go to the movies if theatres only played one movie? No. People love variety, and though your website may be about golf clubs all the time, what surfers want is your golf club site to include recent information and news about the golf club world. They need specs on the latest club technology. More users will come to the site and potentially click your Google AdSense ads.

This does not mean you have to update your website every day. Many Google AdSense practitioners we talk to update their content once a week but no later than twice a month. If you can update your content every day, well good for you and your free time! But many AdSensers use AdSense for parttime income, and once a week is sufficient to keep your website relevant.

Tip #4: AdSense Format

If you are adding AdSense to blogs, chances are the blog site mandates certain sizes of their AdSense ads. However, if you developed your own site, you can create custom sizes for your ads. Google adds a step in their wizard for creating AdSense ads of different sizes. A lot of research has been done that shows wider ads are more successful than other sized ads. Below are the three most popular and successful ad sizes.

160×600 wide skyscraper

300×250 medium rectangle

336×280 large rectangle

Tip #5: Choose your Color Wisely

Another step in the AdSense creation wizard allows you to choose the color scheme for the ad. Your ideal solution is to choose colors that blend into the color scheme of your website or blog. The background and border color should be the same color as the most prominent color on your website. We have had better success with black for the text color no matter what the text color on the website is. If not choosing black, the most dominant font color on your site should be used. Another major tip is to not use background or border colors. Experience shows that ads without background colors or borders get more clicks than ads with background colors or borders.

Tip #6: Layout and Positioning

Surfers do not browser the Internet looking for AdSense ads to click. Although that would be great to the AdSenser, surfers browse the Internet looking for quality content. Who knew! It is best to keep your AdSense ads in subtle but obvious locations. Though this may seem counterintuitive, it is not. The subtleness comes from the natural flow of the website and the placement of the ads. Say, you have a page of ten paragraphs. Put two ads at the end of the third paragraph and another two ads at the end of the sixth paragraph. A surfer reading the page content will eye the AdSense ads in a natural manner, during the course of regular reading. That is ideal. So, the placement of the ad is subtle enough that the ads work in the flow of the page, but the ads are obvious enough that they will be viewed by visitors.

Tip #7: Maximize the Ads

Google does not allow unlimited ads. This prevents Made for AdSense (MFA) sites or Free for All (FFA) sites from posting nothing but ads. Google has set a maximum of six ads per page, three AdSense units, two AdSense search boxes, and one unit of ad links. Maxing out your limit does increase the potential for profit, provided you are using the previous 6 tips.

In summary, use these 7 tips wisely. Keep them in mind when creating blogs or websites and adding AdSense ads. You will find that your click through rate increases, and your profit increases as well. Happy AdSensing!

Here are 10 things it could do to improve itself:

1) Google needs to fix several advanced search problems. Many of them have been known for several months. These are things that should work. For example, having the Boolean operator OR work properly. Greg Notess points out many of them on his site. A feature that would be nice to have is the ability to turn Google’s new autostemming feature on or off.

2) Google’s page estimates haven’t been close to accurate for many months. I’ve been told that they’re, “just estimates.” However, can’t estimates be more accurate?

3) Advanced search documentation should state that longer html web pages (over 101kb) and pdf files (over 120kb) are indexed only up to those points. If what you need to find is past that arbitrary limit, you will not find it. Why won’t Google state that they have size restrictions?

4) The company should clearly state that they don’t show all backlinks when running a link: search.

5) Google needs to work harder to remove spam and many duplicates and near duplicates from the database. If that doesn’t work, how about clustering them underneath one representative page?

6) I’ve been a Blogger customer for a couple of years. I’m also supposed to have better access to customer service since I’m a former Blogger Pro customer. I had a problem about a month ago (it’s been solved) but I’ve yet to hear back from Blogger’s customer service. I’ve also heard from a few people that customer service for Google Appliance customers might also leave a bit to be desired.

7) I agree with Danny Sullivan, Google Bombing/manipulation is an issue that needs to be addressed.

When the company announces a new service it should work properly. Three weeks ago they announced a shortcut allowing you to enter an airline name and flight number. However, it doesn’t work for many airlines (including two major airlines in Google’s home state California and for some flights if it has a four digit flight number.)

9) In late August IEEE announced that Google was crawling abstracts of their publication database. According to the news release, the project was to be completed by September. That was five months ago and a very small percentage of IEEE material appears in Google. What happened?

10) In 2001 Google spokesperson David Krane told News.Com, “…we’ve firmly established ourselves as the No. 1 search service on the Internet, and this can be attributed to our laser-like focus on a search-only business model.” It’s obvious that this business model is gone.

Search Engine Optimization is a process which provides improved, preferential positioning in major search engines and directories, including Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Many companies feel that to get onto page one is next to impossible and that search engine optimization is a mystery. Search Engine Optimization is something that everyone talks about but few people really understand. Search engine optimization is just a matter of understanding what search engines look for when they visit your site. Organic or Natural Search Engine OptimizationOrganic or natural search engine optimization is the process of a comprehensive analysis of keywords and phrases and the implementation of ethical programming techniques for optimal natural (non-sponsored) placement in search engine results. The option of adWords is very good to a certain point and in general the Search Engine Optimization is the tool that gives the ROI for a long time for each website.

The world wide web is a highly competitive market. Companies vie for the attention of billions of internet users in the search for better revenue. A lynch pin to the internet marketing war is the search engine.

Search engines are internet venues where billions of people congregate to search for information. The most prominent search engine giants are Google and Yahoo. The kind of traffic these dot-com companies receive per hour is phenomenal.

So naturally, companies would gravitate towards placing their links and sites in an attempt to garner more visits to their web sites.

In order to maximize ranking and placement, companies have used tools such as search engine optimization or SEO. Search engine optimization is the method or process of improving a web site’s ranking in a search engine listing.

Legitimate search engine optimization practices focus on the improvement of a page’s ranking in the search engine list by improving site content, usability and using legitimate methos of promotion through web phenomena such as viral marketing.

Search engines all use complex algorithms in keeping their relevancy in the web and to keep illegal and abusive search engine optimization methods from prospering. However, “black hat” SEO users will always be around so it is expected that search engine giant such as Google and Yahoo will continue to make more complex algorithms to filter the garbage out.

Organic searches are searches conducted by web users in a search engine that is free from solicitations. A study from Jupiter Media stated that 5 out of 6 commercial online purchases came from organic searches versus paid online ads.

This has made SEO much more in demand in creating revenue for companies as SEO is not a paid ad but a method of intrinsically improving content.

Here are a few tips on improving content for a much more improved result in organic searches:

1. Expertise. Follow your strengths. Sites you set up must be on subject you consider yourself an expert on. People can smell an amateur a mile away.

2. Plan the site. A good layout for the site can improve usability. This in turn will not unnecessarily aggravate the browser.

3. Research. Check out the competition and see what they have set up. See what works and what does not. If possible try to communicate with users in forums and get feedback on what should or can be improved further.

4. Decide on important keywords. Decide on the most important keywords to use for your sight. Include these keywords in the metatags, copy page, page title, and file names.

5. The Search Engine is your friend. Make friends with your search engine and don’t give it a hard time. Being nice and friendly to it will make its job easier to serve your site up to your target audience.

6. Focus. Focus on the topic at hand and nothing else. The rule is one topic per page.

7. Join the directories. Directories are repositories of knowledge done by human hands while search engine are huge databases collected by mostly machine methods. The relevancy of your page when joining the right directory may shoot through the roof. Of course, make sure you know what you are talking about.

8. Start a linking campaign. A most effective SEO method. This is a must to do. Ask your allies, strategic partners, friends and acquaintances to place your site’s URL link on their sites. With a short description this can draw traffic from other sites and increase exposure. Google especially ranks the importance of its sites by the number of sites linked to it.

9. Repetition is the key to victory. Keep repeating the above tips, supporting and increasing what works and killing what does not as fast as possible until the desired result is achieved.

In the world of search engine optimization, content matters a lot. If a site has amateur or worse falsified information, fewer and fewer browsers will want to visit it. They will even spread bad news faster than good news so expect a garbage site to be ignored even in a week’s time.

A company mostly relies on its official web site to build a reliable customer base, to interact and get feedback from customers, and to use the site for advertising purposes.

With search engine optimization, some techniques are employed so that a web site will be listed on top of the list of results when a user types in a keyword by going to Google, Yahoo, MSN, or other search engines.

Emerging on top of a search list would lead more business your way that is why search engine optimization or SEO tactics are employed.

Some companies employ the services of establishments or individuals who deal with search engine optimization.

This would involve the development of a more informative and user-friendly web site. It may also include pay-per-click or adwords services, such as the one offered by Google.

Another thing that can yield positive results at a lower cost, as compared to an adword campaign, is optimizing a web site for organic search.

This would mainly require keyword density which would result to more traffic going to your web site.

In effect, you will have an added clientele and this should lead more business your way.

If you would like to have a hands-on experience with search engine optimization and you would not like to get a third-party SEO service provider, there are some techniques which are easy to learn so that you can do it yourself. Take a look at the following:

1. Take a lot of time with developing your web site’s content.

For most web sites, content is the key. When writing the content of your web pages, insert vital keywords which relate to the products and services that your company offers.

Make it brief and concise, yet informative.

You might see that Internet users do not actually read a web site’s content word-for-word.

They just skim through the text and concentrate on the articles that they need and the data which they find interesting. A 600-word article may be too boring or too long for a user to read.

Keep your facts up-to-date so that users will visit your web site more often. Do not forget toinclude a lot of helpful links, articles and guides that users can forward to another user and add to your customer base.

2. Make the overall design user friendly.

In most cases, the rule the simpler, the better applies. Do not design your web site in an overly-complicated way that users will find it too “frightening” to browse through.

Adapt the design to your target market. If your target audience is of a younger age, make sure that the colors and designs are funky, youthful and attention-grabbing.

For a more mature audience, you can use subdued colors and have a more elegant theme and overall web site design.

3. Vary the keyword for each individual web page.

Think of every possible keywords or phrases that will apply to your products and services.

Each user is different and may not necessarily use the keyword that you expect them to type in the search bar. Search engines offer tools which will guide you through finding the correct keywords for search engine optimization.

4. Make sure that your hyper links are visible, accessible and informative.

Providing users with hyperlinks or HTML links which are useful and easy to find is yet another way to optimize your web site.

5. Learn how to lead traffic to your site.

Seek the advise of experts on this field if you do not know how to lead traffic to your site. Develop a plan and learn how to use the necessary tools pull traffic your way.

Gather all the statistical data that you can use to keep your web site on top of the search engines’ list.

Vary your web site’s contents and keywords to adapt to the current trend. If there is a particular word or phrase that you have not used when searching for keywords, use it instead to lead more traffic your way.

Be flexible enough to change the web site’s contents and fulfill the ever-changing needs of the online users.

All in all, you would have your work cut out for you if you want to employ do-it-yourself search engine optimization techniques.

As an operator of a professional article distribution service, I get questions all the time from customers about SEO, article marketing, link building, and press releases. It would probably take a whole book to address all the questions in details. But here are some of the most common questions that I’ve encountered. Hopefully, you find them useful.

Q: Why perform article marketing at all?

You do article marketing for 2 reasons: direct traffic from the links in your author resource box and for SEO purposes. When you write and submit your articles for publication, you are allowed to include 2 or 3 links at the end of the articles. These are what we usually refer to as “back links”. The more back links you have from authority and well established sites, the higher rankings your web pages will get.

Therefore, article marketing is one of the best way to give you long term traffic. You get traffic from the articles AND the search engines month after month.

Q: What is the difference between article submission and press releases?

Traditionally, press releases are used as stories to capture the attention of news agents, in the hope that the stories will be published and the business owners get free publicity. However, the game is very different on the Internet.

Press release on the Internet is becoming more and more about link building. Press releases are sold based on active links included in the press releases. In other words, if you want live links in your press releases, be prepared to pay a price for it.

In this aspect, press releases and article submission are similar. Both can be used to build back links for SEO purposes. However, news releases are often indexed by news engines such as Google News, Yahoo News, and MSN News. These news aggregators are responsible for delivering news to millions of online visitors each month. So if you get your news releases into those indexes, you will get immediate exposure; at least until your news becomes outdated.

If you are just starting out, you should issue press releases and do article distributions for maximum results. Press releases will get you the immediate attention you need, and the articles will get you long term traffic.

Q: Does article marketing really work for SEO?

I get this question a lot. And the short answer is, “Yes!” I don’t care what the experts say. I only believe in the results that I see. Time after time, customers have reported improved in search engine rankings after submitting just a few articles to several hundred article directories. It is not uncommon to see an internal page ranking in page 7 or 10 of the search results to jump to page 1 or 2 in just a few short weeks. If you can get 1 page to rank, you can get 10 pages to rank. That’s how you can continue to scale your traffic.

Q: How many articles should I submit per week?

For every website you promote, you should shoot for at least 250 articles to get any kind of viable traction. Anything less than that, you may not get enough traffic for your internet business to work. It takes time and patience to write and submit 250 articles. Logically speaking, you should be able to write 10 decent articles per day. That depends on how fast you can write. If you want to go the fast route, outsource all your article writing.

In fact, there are tons of examples of highly successful internet marketers who are earning a good income just by using article marketing alone. Pretty impressive stuff. So there is little doubt that article marketing does indeed work!

Most of us use search engines as a regular part of our daily routine both at work and home. Many of you probably have no idea that you can easily do a lot more with search. Invest 5 or 10 minutes here and I will help you open up a new world of search using Google. I promise it will be time well spent!

Did you know that you can limit your Google search to a specific site?

Let’s say you would like only to search the CNN/Money site looking for information on “Ford”. All you need to do is… ford site:money.cnn.com

People tell me all the time that I need to add search to my site. While I agree and have not gotten around to it I always tell them that my sites are well indexed by the search engines and that they can search my site today. For example… “credit card” site:everydollarmatters.com …currently yields 33 page hits.

Is your search as comprehensive as it could be?

If you are researching the term “website development” did you know that you are potentially missing a bunch of other good sites? There are over 1.1 million indexed pages using the term “web site”. Try… “website development” OR “web site development” …and you will get back the top pages using both spellings.

Maybe you are searching for a decent tutorial on html or an online course. Try… “html tutorial” OR “html training” online

Or (no pun intended), you might be shopping for a forum in some areas that are of interest to you.
”living green” forum OR “global warming” forum

OR is a nice expansive google search operator.

What can you do to narrow down your search?

Sometimes you are looking for a specific phrase. For instance… “getting your website online” yields 1230 pages as opposed to getting your website online which yields 114,000,000 million pages Using quotes around the phrase will limit the result to that specific phrase.

Maybe you are researching the JFK assasination. You could search for… “kennedy assassination” “kennedy assassination” video.

You can also limit your google search to specific areas of the internet. For example:

*Google Book Search – Search the full text of books
*Google Code Search – Search public source code
*Google Scholar – Search scholarly papers
*Google News archive search – Search historical news
*U.S. Government – Search all U.S. federal, state and local government sites
*Universities – Search a specific school’s website

To access this functionality just click on the “advanced search” hyperlink on the Google homepage. You will find these options towards the bottom of the page.

Often times you will receive page hits back that you are not interested in.

Suppose you were searching for the term six sigma and wanted to exclude all references to General Electric and Motorola. You could use the following search string… six sigma -ge -motorola -”general electric” … The “-” minus sign is used to exclude certain keywords or phrases.

At my site you will find a “Quick Google Search Cheat Sheet”. Happy searching.
