Google… one of the Internets MOST powerful search engines recently announced a new FREE service that makes it easier for you to improve your websites coverage within Googles index through its NEW collaborative crawling system.

On the down side though, Google does not ‘Guarantee’ immediate inclusion, But, is still good news for those of you who have just finished building a website and are ready to submit to the top search engines.

So, what’s this NEW service called that Google just released?

It’s called “Google Sitemaps”.

The real cool thing about “Google Sitemaps” IS it accepts RSS(Real Simple Syndication) and Atom feeds with the .XML extension as one of the accepted formats for submitting your websites Sitemap for inclusion in Googles index.

This is just one of the four formats Google accepts and is the one that I’m going to use for the rest of this article to show you how to generate your own .XML sitemap of your website for inclusion in Google.

It’s real easy to do so don’t worry about it being to complicated.

So, with that said, lets go to Step #1.

Step #1. Sign up for “Google Sitemaps”.

This step is easy, simply follow the link provide below and sign up for a Free account. It should only take you a few minutes to do, then once your done, come back here and go to Step #2.

Go to: http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/login

Step #2. Generate your .XML sitemap.

In this step your going to generate a .XML sitemap for your website using a Free online sitemap generator.

This Free online generator will build you a sitemap up to 500 pages. If you have a larger website with thousands of webpages you’ll have to use a paid service and/or software to generate yours.

Go to: http://www.xml-sitemaps.com

Enter your required information on the form provided.

Step #3. Upload your generated .XML sitemap to your server.

Once your generated sitemap is finished(your generated .XML file should be called site.xml.gz) it’s now time to upload it to your server using your FTP(File Transfer Protocol) program.

This is very important that you do this before submitting it to Google Sitemaps for inclusion.

Step #4. Submit your NEW .XML sitemap to “Google Sitemaps”.

Now that you have generated your “Sitemap” for your website and uploaded it to your server all you have to do now is to go to “Google Sitemaps” and submit your sitemap URL.

(ex. http://www.yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml.gz)

That’s it.

Now, depending on Google, your sitemap should get downloaded within the next 24 hours, so be sure to check and see that it did and that there wasn’t any problems or errors.

Also, your going to want to be able to track your indexed webpages within the search engines, especially Google, so you can see how things are going, so I’ll leave you with one last resource that will do this for you.

Go to: http://www.uptimebot.com

All you have to do is enter your URL and click “GO”.

The results page will list the results from Google and 9 other popular search engines.

When it comes down to anything happening online, Google is certainly ‘king of the castle’ it would seem. As well as stamping its authority for being the internets most powerful search engine utilized by surfers internationally, Google also has additional strings to its bow and provides services for email, more commonly known as gmail, sitemaps, news feeds and is even a provider for hosting it’s latest venture, Google Video where visitors can upload their videos so that others may view them online.

However, one of Google’s trump cards is Google Adsense, which is a multi billion dollar money spinner. The way Google adsense works is very straight forward and so simple that many entrepreneurs are probably wondering why they didn’t think of the service themselves. Google Adsense is essentially a method for merchants to raise additional income by way of displaying advertisements on their site. What makes it so unique though is that the merchant is displaying not his own ads but those of alternative companies.

The ads that are displayed will be determined by the content on the webpage that the ads are to be displayed on, so for example, if you own a plumbing business then it is highly likely that all of the ads being displayed will be to advertise the services of companies involved with plumbing.

That’s Crazy! Why Send Your Visitors & Customers To The Competition?

Well yeah, on the face of it I can see why you’d be thinking that, it does seem a little unorthodox to want to drive your traffic away but get this, every time somebody clicks on one of the ads displayed on your website, guess what? You get paid for it, over and over again. If your website gets lots of traffic to it and your visitors like the ads displayed because the ads offer something of interest to them then it’s highly likely that your CTR or ‘click through ratio’ will be very high, meaning you stand to really make some serious money from Google Adsense.

So How Much Do I Make Per Click?

This is how clever Google Adsense is as it utilizes a system of ’smart pricing’ whereby it will not pay you a set fee per ad but rather will decide your payout depending on the content on your site, the relevancy of the click, where the visitor was referred from, whether the click was valid or invalid, and many other considerations. Google has a very advanced algorithm to substantiate this data and there is no easy way to try and see what makes it tick.

What If I Want To Advertise Myself?

That’s what’s great about Google Adsense because it is a win win situation for both advertiser and publisher alike. Perhaps you run a business and your website is very recent and you have hardly any traffic coming to your site, If this is the case then you can very easily become an advertiser and run your ads on other content related sites, thereby reversing the roles and driving targeted traffic to your site and increasing your exposure and also increasing your chances of making more sales etc. Google has a service known as Google Adwords and it is simply a case of signing up for the program and then creating a campaign to display your ads. For this you will be charged every time a visitor clicks on one of your ads or you may opt to be charged by the amount of impressions your ad receives. There are a number of options available so it makes sense to do a little research before making your campaign live.

Whether you choose to be a publisher or an advertiser, Google Adsense is so easy to implement and can be functional in minutes as in most cases it is simply a task of copying and pasting some very basic html code that is provided by Google Adsense.

If you want to drive much more traffic to your website or you’re a publisher and you want to make easy additional cash for sitting back and waiting for someone to click on one of the ads on your site, then Google Adsense just may be the solution to your current needs.

The Internet is vast and there are billions of webpages out there all needing to be indexed by major search engines such as Yahoo, Google and MSN. Not all of these pages have yet been indexed. It takes time for search engines to crawl new pages. For instance, Google typically crawls certain websites less once it knows that these sites don’t regularly update their content.

Other reasons for pages not being indexed is that the owner of a site didn’t properly link certain pages. These ‘orphan’ pages which are not correctly linked from the rest of the main website may not be indexed by search engines. Another possibility could be that a website or domain is too new and hasn’t yet been indexed.

Unfortunately for you, some of these un-indexed webpages could have links pointing to your website. You are losing valuable inbound links because search engines such as Google don’t know these webpages exist. One of the key elements in ranking higher on Google is inbound links. The importance of such links cannot be stressed enough.

One way inbound links instead of reciprocal links work the best for Google. Google keeps changing it’s algorithm and in it’s last update tried to filter out sites with excessive reciprocal links. A reciprocal link is one in which you link to a website and that website links back to you. Google rightly or wrongly believes that reciprocal links may be manipulated to generate more inbound links. Emphasis is placed on one-way links. Sometimes you may arrange a link trade where Website A links to Website B. The owner of website B also owns Website C and uses Website C to link back to Website A. However, this attempt to trick Google may not work.

Most of us who work in or are familiar with the search engine optimization field know that inbound links are the key to ranking high on Google. Especially one-way links. The trick is to get these inbound links. Traditional methods of obtaining one-way links by leaving your website URL in a comment on blogs is dying as blogs increasingly use the “nofollow” tag in their A HREF statement. The “nofollow” tag tells search engines to not follow the link or count the link to another website.

One of the simplest ways to get links is to tell Google about third party sites which already link to you. Many of these webpages which link to your website haven’t yet been indexed by Google. These are wasted links as Google doesn’t know that they exist. The good news is that you have the ability to let Google know about these links.

1. Start by examining your web logs to check for referrers. Then save this file containing your referrers into a text document. Use a text editor of your choice to filter this referrer file and remove any hits from search engines.

2. Next filter out any referrer webpages which have already been indexed by Google. This second step can be time consuming and a tedious task so it can be skipped if you choose.

3. Use an html editor to make proper URLs from this list of referrers. Make hot-links of all the URLs.

4. Save the document as an html page and place this document on your website or blog. Be sure not to include more than 90 links per page. If you have more thank 90 referrer links then split the links into multiple pages, each page containing no more than 90 links.

5. Place hot links from your website, blog or other websites which you control to the webpage containing this list of referrers. If you’ve created more than one list of referrers then be sure to link to these additional pages as well. It’s a good idea to cross-link your multiple referrer pages.

6. The last step is to wait for Google’s bot to come and index your new referrer webpage. Google will follow the hot-links from your webpage to your list of referrer’s and index these webpages that have not yet been indexed. You’re directly helping your own website by telling Google of important inbound links. You’re also helping your referrers by linking their webpage. You will be leaking PR from your webpage. That’s why it’s important to create new referrer webpage containing a listing of your inbound links.

Perhaps you’ve heard about the new affiliate marketing membership site called “Google Assassin“. It has created quite a bit of shock waves in the internet marketing world lately. And if you visit the sales page, you will understand why. It’s perhaps one of the BEST sales copy you’ve ever seen in internet marketing.

But if you have been on the internet marketing bandwagon for some period of time, you know that the main objective of a sales copy is to SELL. What’s said or promised in the sales copy may NOT be the same as what you will get in the actual product. You can assume that 99% of the sales copies in the internet marketing world are like that, and Google Assassin is no exception. So please keep this in mind when you read the sales page. So, don’t get too excited and carried away by your emotions.

I am not saying that Google Assassin is a scam. What I am trying to say is that it is NOT a perfect product but it does have some excellent features that are of great help for the beginners. I have used and explored most of the features in the member site and I like to provide an honest review here, including the pros and cons.

First up, Google Assassin is more suitable for the beginners. If you’re an experienced internet marketers, you will feel that most of the features and tools are too basic for you. You may have already been using it everyday. But if you’re a beginner, this basic is crucial for your success right from the beginning. Because you will learn the RIGHT way (step-by-step) how to tackle a market, research its profit potential, and create successful online marketing campaigns.

In my personal opinion, the most powerful BENEFIT for the beginners is the “automation”. For example, most beginners have no idea how to do the following tasks:

- how to pick the right product to promote,

- how to perform keyword research,

- how to build a review website based on the researched keywords,

- how to create a PPC campaign based on the researched keywords.

The good news is that Google Assassin has automated these tasks for you with just a few clicks of the button. For example, in order to create a campaign, you just need to click on the “New Campaign” button and then select whether you want to create “Link Campaign” or “Website Campaign”. If you select “website campaign”, Google Assassin will then create a review web page for you. The automation can save you a lot of time. NOTE: Google Assassin also has its own powerful keyword research tool, spy tool and products selection tool. I’m not going to cover these tools here. You can read about them in my blog at http://ebuzzone.blogspot.com

Besides the automation, another benefit for the beginner is the Google Assassin’s “Affiliate Blueprints Coaching“. If you happen to join the membership, you MUST go to this area and read these two training courses: “Slash Your AdWords Cost By Up To 70%” and “Article Marketing For 2007“. There are some great secrets revealed in these courses and I’m sure they can also benefit the experienced marketers. After you go through these courses, you will have a clearer picture on the whole money-making process and how the Assassin’s tools connect together to help you create successful marketing campaigns.

What I don’t like about Google Assassin?

I have one complaint for this product. It doesn’t have a member FORUM inside. I really hope that they will add this feature in the near future because I feel forum is very important so that knowledge can be shared among the members. And forum is also a great avenue for the members to give feedbacks or inputs to the owner for further improvement or enhancement to the product if necessary. Google Assassin will certainly be a stronger product if it has a member forum inside the member area.

Last but not least, please understand that although Google Assassin has many tools that can help you to automate many activities, you still need to spend time and effort to learn and do. You need to get your hands dirty, if you don’t take actions, nothing will happen. Please always keep that in mind.

In my previous article, I shared with you the way internet marketers boost their online businesses link popularity by placing quality text links on high ranking websites and I gave an example of a sound pagerank5 web directory http://www.asondheim.org which offers permanent high quality and cheap text links. Today, I am going to share with you something more extraordinary in the internet marketing community.

You certainly know already that one of the best ways to promote your online business is to place pay-per-click ads (also called PPC) on major search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN etc… But did you know that it is possible to legally promote your business through Google Adwords (PPC ads) and make huge amounts of money without actually paying for those PPC ads? A New York Doctor, Dr Jon Cohen, has made already made $87 millions that way, and what is more exciting, he decided to reveal his secret in an e-book he called “Get Google Ads Free“.

Read his amazing story at http://googleads-forfree.com/free.html.

When he was launched his product, the first reaction of the online marketing community was that of doubt, incredulity, surprise. Within weeks, people everywhere were talking about it and many online marketers started using the system or selling it as affiliates for the company. Who would not be surprised? How can you get google ads for free? Unbelievable, isn’t it?

You might be even more surprised to learn that the product’s greatest endorser is none other than Google itself!

Yes! As shocking as it may seem, Google has NO problem with this marketing tutorial which reveals how anyone can get ads on their search engine for Free!

You certainly must be curious to know how such a thing is possible, as Google makes its money from the sale of both AdWords (PPCs) and AdSense (where webmasters allow Google to show their ads on their pages).

One might think that any information that revealed how an advertiser could get their AdWords pay-per-clicks free would be damaging to Google, and therefore Google would not want anyone finding out about it, right?

WRONG! It appears that this simple secret system developed by the retired New York doctor contains an interesting “twist”: i.e. while allowing advertisers to eliminate their AdWords costs, it does not reduce a single dollar in AdWords revenue for Google.

For many internet marketers, it is a good news to know how they can build and promote their online business via Google but eliminating your Google AdWords costs as the course “Get Google Ads Free!” explains in details. So, if you’d like to learn more, then go read the whole story and grab this amazing marketing breakthrough for yourself at: http://googleads-forfree.com/free.html.

This seems to be the talk of the town as rumors are now running amok all over the internet that the 2nd most powerful website on the entire Worldwide-Web may file BANKRUPTCY.

This would come as a SHOCK to investors and “Googlers” alike who both profit and benefit from the use of the World’s largest and most powerful search engine which receives far in excess of 100 MILLION unique daily visitors and well over 300 million individual searches daily – making it perhaps the single most valuable public data resource as an “information bank” online the world over.

But is the rumor true or false?

The origin of the rumor occurred when some savvy Internet marketers began making statements that they had heard “insiders’ talk” that the company may face financial disaster with the release of a new system called “Get Google Ads Free” that would allow advertisers to get their otherwise pay-per-click (PPC) advertising completely free.

This, of course, would naturally lead directly (like a domino-effect) to the collapse of Google’s sibling program AdSense; as its only revenue comes from the direct sales of AdWords “clicks.”

The “new system” in question and responsible for the controversy over getting AdWords pay-per-clicks free is that developed by Dr Jon Cohen of New York City, New York (now retired) who discovered a simple, yet effective means, for getting Google PPC ads without having to suffer the costs involved.

The retired New York doctor and native has a publicly disclosed net worth now in excess of $70 million [US], having generated well over $377 million in product sales from sixteen (16) separate online businesses within just nine (9) years since first venturing online in 1998 (about the same time as Google was founded).

It is estimated by company insiders and leading financial analysts that the “good doctor” (as he’s called by “all who know him”) has purportedly saved well over $93 million (some estimates suggest closer to $136 million) in otherwise paid advertising at Google and the other major players in the PPC targeted-search arena online – including Yahoo, MSN, AskJeeves, AllTheWeb.com, HotBot, AltaVista, Lycos and Netscape, just to name a few.

When the “secret” became available to the general masses, its release caused such a major sweeping stir among the community of Internet-marketers, affiliate-marketers, webmasters, ecommerce company owners and surfers alike that the site quickly rose to break the top most visited 1,000 websites on the entire planet.

When asked if the “secret” would somehow ruin Google, Dr Cohen revealed almost cryptically that it actually would bring about just the opposite effect, and “stimulate” even more business volume for the virtual giant.

Many people were dismayed to find that Google itself is deliberately allowing the purchase of 100,000’s of PPC ads offering the secret system to the general public — which indicates to most observers that either they [Google] haven’t caught it, or they simply feel that it somehow is not a threat to their continued operation.

For anyone’s inspection factual and hard evidence supporting this can be seen by simply looking to the right-hand column when doing a search for “get google ads free” (specifically in quotation marks) at Google.com under the “Sponsored Links” section.

You can also see nearly 100,000 specific results in the “organic” fields index located in the center and which occupies the bulk of the results pages.

One would think that if Google felt threatened by such a release as this earth-shaking “secret” is, they would hardly allow for either paid-ads or organic content to make the top searches regarding it.

However, evidence supports to the contrary – and this being the case now for more then six (6) months.

Mysteriously, within just two (2) hours of its initial release Google itself actually did in fact ‘pause’ the parent firm’s attempts at advertising the new system using PPCs on their search engine – only, however, to release the hold after a Review Team consisting of some of Google’s top executives completed performing an in-depth investigation and made the determination to ALLOW the ads to run.

The secret system was recently revised however to include “major new content” and “more exhaustive instructions,” and is now available at its Home Site.

The most important addition is that of a so called “string of code” (tech-talk for some HTML) that can be added to any webpage(s) that instantly causes the elimination of the page owner’s AdWords costs right away.

Even a “live” woman spokes-representative (”Rachel”) has been added to the site, and who appears to literally walk out onto the webpage and talk to visitors and explain a bit more how the mysterious new breakthrough system works.

Since the addition of this new “live” spokes-woman has now appeared at the site, company Vice President of Sales & Marketing, Mr Todd Coutrin states that “sales for the system have skyrocketed above 2,430% suddenly and with no limit in sight.”

Coutrin continues: “With the newest revision now in place, plus all the additions added, affiliates for the new system can expect to earn even more than ever before!” (Note: Affiliates make up the bulk of the firm’s sales generation.)

The refund rate for the new revised version of the secret (named V5.1) has dropped to less than half of what it was before the newer version’s release; meaning it’s now even more readily-received and put to use than ever before (perhaps in large part to the newer simplicity of application) – now making it the safest and one of the best resellers for the networks of affiliate marketers who earn their revenues from the reselling of other electronic publishers’ stock and digital product lines.

When asked, Google company representatives stated matter-of-factly that the rumors of bankruptcy for the ecommerce giant are simply not true, and that the rumor millings are in fact simply the result of “panics” brought on by the usual hysteria associated with anything large, new or revolutionary – or in this case, all three.

Again, Google itself seems to be the biggest supporter of the “new system” as it’s allowing more and more advertisers to promote the new system on its search engine before over 100 million daily searches and surfers.

This is extremely good news for those who are seeking a cost effective way of promoting a product or service for FREE using Googles Adwords and having Googles permission to do so.

Making money with Google AdSense can be as easy as creating the Google AdSense account and including ads on a site. However, to get the most out of AdSense takes more effort. It requires designing an attractive layout, using proper keywords and positioning among others.

Tip #1: Keywords Keywords Keywords

Google uses keywords as a major part of their algorithm to determine search results. This is simple – a website promoting golf clubs should include golf clubs multiple times on the website. This makes sense. Google will parse through the content on the website, find keywords for golf clubs and understand that the website is about golf clubs. Make sure the quantity of the keywords you are promoting is high. Google will detect keyword density and move your website ever closer to the desired number 1 page results spot!

Tip #2: Quality Content

While keywords are important, having a website that is nothing but keywords after keywords after keywords is not the way to go. Google is extremely concerned about quality content. Both you the webmaster and the casual surfer appreciate this. When searching for golf clubs, you want to see a quality site on golf clubs, showing specs, prices, different brands, etc. What you do not want to see is a website that says nothing but golf clubs over and over again. Therefore, Google not only looks at keywords but looks at content. Google’s customer is the web surfer. And the web surfer wants content. So, Google includes quality content in their search engine algorithms as well as keywords.

Tip #3: Update your Content

The more quality content you have, the better. But it is also important that you update your content. It is quality information that originally gets surfers to your site. But it is the continually updated content that keeps them coming. Would you go to the movies if theatres only played one movie? No. People love variety, and though your website may be about golf clubs all the time, what surfers want is your golf club site to include recent information and news about the golf club world. They need specs on the latest club technology. More users will come to the site and potentially click your Google AdSense ads.

This does not mean you have to update your website every day. Many Google AdSense practitioners we talk to update their content once a week but no later than twice a month. If you can update your content every day, well good for you and your free time! But many AdSensers use AdSense for parttime income, and once a week is sufficient to keep your website relevant.

Tip #4: AdSense Format

If you are adding AdSense to blogs, chances are the blog site mandates certain sizes of their AdSense ads. However, if you developed your own site, you can create custom sizes for your ads. Google adds a step in their wizard for creating AdSense ads of different sizes. A lot of research has been done that shows wider ads are more successful than other sized ads. Below are the three most popular and successful ad sizes.

160×600 wide skyscraper

300×250 medium rectangle

336×280 large rectangle

Tip #5: Choose your Color Wisely

Another step in the AdSense creation wizard allows you to choose the color scheme for the ad. Your ideal solution is to choose colors that blend into the color scheme of your website or blog. The background and border color should be the same color as the most prominent color on your website. We have had better success with black for the text color no matter what the text color on the website is. If not choosing black, the most dominant font color on your site should be used. Another major tip is to not use background or border colors. Experience shows that ads without background colors or borders get more clicks than ads with background colors or borders.

Tip #6: Layout and Positioning

Surfers do not browser the Internet looking for AdSense ads to click. Although that would be great to the AdSenser, surfers browse the Internet looking for quality content. Who knew! It is best to keep your AdSense ads in subtle but obvious locations. Though this may seem counterintuitive, it is not. The subtleness comes from the natural flow of the website and the placement of the ads. Say, you have a page of ten paragraphs. Put two ads at the end of the third paragraph and another two ads at the end of the sixth paragraph. A surfer reading the page content will eye the AdSense ads in a natural manner, during the course of regular reading. That is ideal. So, the placement of the ad is subtle enough that the ads work in the flow of the page, but the ads are obvious enough that they will be viewed by visitors.

Tip #7: Maximize the Ads

Google does not allow unlimited ads. This prevents Made for AdSense (MFA) sites or Free for All (FFA) sites from posting nothing but ads. Google has set a maximum of six ads per page, three AdSense units, two AdSense search boxes, and one unit of ad links. Maxing out your limit does increase the potential for profit, provided you are using the previous 6 tips.

In summary, use these 7 tips wisely. Keep them in mind when creating blogs or websites and adding AdSense ads. You will find that your click through rate increases, and your profit increases as well. Happy AdSensing!

Increasingly, hosting providers, especially free ones, are strongly encouraging their users to use Google Apps for managing their email. This is generally because the provider wants to reduce the processing overhead involved in running POP accounts and save on the disk space involved in storing mailboxes.

Generally speaking, it is true to say that using Google Apps gives much better performance than a small to medium sized host and you can usually tell when a host wants its users to go the GoogleApps route by the type of email support it offers.

If the host offers the sort of POP support where you can create separate email accounts – for example, admin@yoursite.com or fred@yoursite.com – then it is probably safe to say that you can expect a reasonably good email service. However, if your hosting account includes a single ‘catch-all’ email account then, even if you can access it through an email client, the chances are that you would be better off using Google Apps.

There are other email solutions out there but they often have a cost attached or do not offer the full functionality that Google Apps does.

Google Apps is actually much more than just email but I suspect that the majority of users do use it just for that. With a basic, out-of-the-box, Google Apps account you can:

- Add up to 100 user accounts

- Add other domains

- Each user account has its own mailbox

- Include a chat facility for your users

- Share and collaborate on documents

- Create private or public websites online and collaborate with others in building them

- Run a group calendar

- Create your own home page, choosing what Google widgets your users see

- and, of course, email

All this might sound a bit daunting if all you need is a couple of email accounts at yoursite.com! Don’t worry – you can turn off anything you don’t need and simply have what is, in effect, Gmail accounts but using your own domain name instead of gmail.com.

You may already have a Google customised search page which includes some of its more useful widgets like news feeds, note pads etc. and if you have a Gmail account you may also be using the page to show your email. The Google Apps home page is just like this except that you can ‘brand’ it with your own logo. (See the front entrance to my email management for an example – home.mypf.org).

From your home page you and your users, if you have any, can log in and access all the functions of the Google Apps site that you have set up and granted permissions for. You can even create your own URLs for specific functions. For instance, mail.mypf.org will take you to a branded Gmail login page.

The branding continues onto the Gmail pages too.

Of course, the whole point of hosting providers steering you towards Google Apps is so that you can get your POP service from there. Just like a regular Gmail account, Google Apps email accounts can also be accessed by POP clients.

Naturally all this comes at a price – but not a financial one! There is a fair amount of setup involved, from verifying that you own the domain for which you are opening the account to changing your domain’s MX (mail exchange) records to point email delivery at your Google Apps account and configuring your mail client to use the Gmail accounts. Don’t panic! I’ll be covering setup in detail in another article.

Meanwhile, you can take a tour at www.google.com/a. Don’t be put off by the reference to business use: Google Apps is just as useful for individuals.

Google has begun to roll out its “Interest Based” advertising engine (starting from March 11 2009). The new system aims to provide what Google calls “more interesting ads”.

AdSense Driven by Immediate Interest

AdSense Google’s current advert delivery system serves adverts on Google and its partner sites (Google’s Content Network). AdSense ads are flighted based on a surfer’s immediate interest. Google guesses the browser’s immediate interest based on the content of the current page being viewed.

Thus if you happen to be browsing a home improvements site and you land on a page that explains how to use a power drill, AdSense will display adverts with products and services based on home improvements and maybe even drills on special offer. This guesswork has a good chance of being correct.

But immediate interest is not abiding interest. Our surfer could be a lady executive looking to buy her husband a new drill for Christmas and the drill is only her very brief and immediate interest.

Interest Based Advertising Targets Your Abiding Interests

Core to the way the new system works is a profile of your interests. Google builds up your personal profile over time. Your profile is based on the kind of sites you regularly visit. Google then shows you ads based on your profile. This is called behavioural targeting.

Your profile is available to you at any time. Go to www.google.com/ ads/preferences to view your personal profile. You can also adjust your profile, by adding or removing areas of interest. You can also choose to opt out of having ads shown to you based on your previous browsing experiences.

This type of behavioural targeting advertising will give advertisers the capability to deliver ads that are filtered by various interest categories. Google has developed a web site that allows advertisers to login and manage their Interest Based ad campaigns.

How It Works

Let’s say you are a keen cyclist. Google’s engine will over time be well aware of your cycling interests, because you often visit sites like Cycling News and Cycling Today and Tour de France results etc. So not only will Google know that you are interested in cycling but it will probably be specific enough to know that you are a road cycling person and not at all interested in mountain biking.

Thus when your surf the net Google will consult your behavioural history and try to show you cycling based ads even when you are not browsing a cycling site.

Choice is Yours

Google Says You Have Choice and Control. This means that you can go the preferences link (above) and add or adjust your preferences using Ads Preferences Manager. You can also opt out of the system altogether.

Opinion

The way the system has been implemented seem quite fair to me. I suppose that many observers will get upset by some perceived invasion of privacy issues. No other behavioural advertising systems allow you to view the data assembled about you. Nor is there one that goes so far as to provide tools for you to adjust how it interacts with you or and even allows for you to opt out completely.

I would be surprised if the system does not quickly become something we are very comfortable and familiar with. A system that we end up relying on to deliver us interesting offers and products that we would normally have missed out on.

References:
Official Google Blog: Making Ads More Interesting (11 March 2009)
